15% of People Worldwide Live with a Disability

June 14, 2011 | By Priscilla Fujimura

A recent report by the World Health Organization and World Bank reveals that more than 1 billion people across the globe live with a disability. You can read a short summary at Disability Scoop.

This news puts a fresh perspective on the recent efforts by the US government to encourage businesses to increase hiring and training of employees with disabilities, as well as the news from the US and other countries of the economic effect of budget cutbacks on citizens with disabilities. While the report does not differentiate between different disabilities in the numbers, it is clear anyway that people with disabilities constitue a large portion of the global population. It is important that we continue our efforts to encourage more inclusive hiring practices as well as embrace universal design to make our world accessible to everyone.
