Drive Systems

Rails:  The upper rail houses a gear rack and a traveling cable while the lower rail provides lateral support. The platform is propelled by means of a carriage mounted rack and pinion drive system.

Motor:  The carriage mounted drive system consists of a 0.55 kw (.75 HP) motor, a gearbox, pinion gear and flexible traveling cable.

Mains Power:  The mains power requirement is 208 to 240 VAC, single phase, on a dedicated 15 amp circuit. A lockable supplementary mains disconnect switch is mounted at the end of the upper rail.

Overspeed Governor:  The Xpress II is provided with an overspeed governor and brake on the upper carriage drive unit which consists of a mechanical overspeed governor sensor, lock and electrical cutout.

Auxiliary Power:  This feature ensures that the lift continues to operate during a power outage. The self contained battery unit can be located up to 4.5m (15ft) away from the drive system and will power the lift up to one hour at full rated load.

Emergency Battery Lowering: During a power outage, this feature allows the platform to travel to the bottom landing.

Attachment Methods

Direct Mount: The rail can be direct mounted to solid concrete, concrete block, wood support posts, or steel support posts in the wall.

Supplimental Direct Mount:  For wood stud walls or thin block walls, the upper rail may be attached to a 2" x 8" board that is secured to the wall. For the lower rail, a 2" x 4" board can be used.

Freestanding Towers:  Required when there are no existing support walls or when the lift must be located away from the wall structure.

Towers in the Core: These towers are fastened to the floor and secured to the walls or stringers.


Operating Controls (standard):  The durable and vandal resistant operating controls have been designed for public use. The platform controls consist of two large illuminated directional control buttons for independent operation, a key switch, and an emergency stop button. The platform controls also activate the platform access ramps and optional curved safety arms with the press of a single button.

Emergency Stop Button (standard):  The platform also features an emergency stop button. An illuminated stop button is available as an option.

Attendant Remote Control Unit (optional):  The Xpress II can also be equipped with a pendant control that allows an attendant to operate the lift while walking beside a passenger.

Call Stations:  The keyed call stations are located at each landing. To operate the lift, the user must insert the key and turn to the "on" position. To call the platform, the user must press one of the directional buttons and hold until the platform reaches the landing. The user then releases the button and the platform and ramps open automatically. If the platform is equipped with optional curved arms, these will also open automatically.  The Xpress II call stations are surface mounted. As an option, Call Stations can be flush or pedestal mounted.

Attendant Call Button (optional):  The attendant call button will notify an attendant that someone requires the use of the lift.  This is a great feature for a lift in a remote location inside the building or outside.

Keyless Operation Kit (optional):  This feature allows the users to operate the lift without a key. The standard key switch on the platform controls and the call stations are removed and plugged (check for local code requirements).

Call with Platform Open (optional):  With this option, the lift travels with the arms in the horizontal position and platform folded down only.

Remote Fold (optional):  This feature allows the platform to be folded up from any call station should the platform be left folded down.


Standard:  The Xpress II guide rails and loading ramps are made of champagne colored anodized aluminum. The conveyance cover is made of beige colored high quality CSA approved plastic. The non-aluminum components of the lift, including the optional arms, are provided in powder coated Satin Grey (fine textured). We use a durable polyester powder paint coating that is electrostatically applied and baked at 210°C (410°F).

Custom:  You can select from 180 colors on Tiger Drylac's RAL Standard Color Chart, Special Finishes and Metalic charts by Tiger Drylac. Handi-Lift, Inc. can custom match colors as well.

Outdoors: Because most components of the Xpress II are made of anodized aluminum they are already prepared for outdoor use. Any components that are not made of aluminum are zinc plated. If the Xpress II is to be used outdoors, in an extreme environment, near swimming pools, hot tubs, or chemicals, it is necessary to use stainless steel fasteners and support towers. An optional outdoor platform cover can be purchased to protect the lift severe weather areas.

Safety Features

Curved Safety Arms: These fully automatic stainless steel safety arms further increase the safety of the passenger. In guarded position, the top of the arm is 948mm (37 3/8") above the platform deck. The design does not detract from the clear platform size.

Folding Seat:  The seat is designed for use by ambulatory passengers and is equipped with a safety belt. 

Bi-Directional Ramp Sensing: This feature detects an obstruction on the stairs and at the same time ensures the wheelchair is centered on the platform deck. When the lift is in the folded position and is called to or from the landing area the leading ramp is sensitive to obstructions.

Under Platform Sensing Plate: This sensing plate detects obstacles underneath the platform and stops the platform before exerting any significant force on the object.

Side of Hanger Obstruction Sensing: This feature is mounted on the side of the platform hanger and designed to protect pedestrian traffic especially when the lift is traveling around corners.

Under Hanger Sensing: This sensing plate detects obstacles underneath the hanger which is important when the platform is traveling in the folded position.

Soft Start and Stop: For passenger safety and comfort, the platform is programmed to slow to 50% of the normal travel speed in advance of the corners and landings.

Platform Folding: Once the passenger has departed the lift, the passenger or anyone else can fold the platform at the call station without the use of a key.

Emergency Manual Platform Folding: In an emergency the platform can be manually folded and it will remain in the folded position without assistance.

Auto Fold:  After a determined period of time the platform can be configured to automatically fold up to ensure the stairway will remain clear if someone forgets to fold the platform.

Pedestrian Safety Lights: This illuminated tube lighting located at the base of the ramps visually alerts pedestrians of the platform’s location during travel.

Pedestrian Audio Alert: When the platform is folded up and traveling between stations, an audio chime on the platform is activated indicating the lift is in motion. The chime is deactivated when a passenger is using the lift.

Platform Lock:  This lock secures the platform in its folded position protecting the lift from vandalism.

Fire Alarm Integration: This option is designed to interface with the building fire safety system, and interrupts power to the lift when the alarm sounds, ensuring the lift will not obstruct stairway traffic during an evacuation. If the lift is in use when the alarm sounds, it will continue to a designated landing.  In some jurisdications automatic fire alarm interface is required.  (See Article)
